My Happy Weekend Picture - Bruges - The Basilica of the Holy Blood

My Happy Weekend picture was taken in 2015 during a visit to Bruges.
Bruges is the capital of the Province of West Flanders, located in Belgium.

It is famous for its historic center, which is listed on the World Heritage Site
of UNESCO.

The picture was taken from the Basilica of the Holy Blood.
(in Dutch: Heilig-Bloedbasiliek, French: Basilique du Saint-Sang).
This building has a great Royal History.

Already in 1134 Thierry of Alsace ordered to build a private double chapel
next to the Oud Steen, the first residence of the Counts of Flanders.
This is now the Town Hall of Bruges.

Thierry went on crusade a second time in 1147, during the Second Crusade.
He returned to his capital, Bruges, on April 7th. 1150 with the relic of the
Precious Blood, however the Bible never mentioned that Christ's blood was
preserved.

Every year there is in Bruges the Procession of the Holy Blood. This takes
place each Ascension Day.

The chapel of Saint Basil was built from 1134 to 1149 and it is dedicated to
St. Basil the Great. This lower chapel was in a dark Romanesque structure.

The Chapel of the Holy Blood , the upper chapel, was transformed in a
Gothic Style at the end of the 15th. century and again in 1823.

The gilded bronze statues represent Archduchess Isabelle of Burgundy,
Mary of Burgundy, Thierry of Alsace and Philip of Alsace.

In the medallions you can see the pictures of
Archduke Albert VII of Austria
Archduke Maximilian III of Austria
Margaret of York
Sibylla of Anjou, wife of Thierry

Inside you can see stained-glass windows in the choir (dated from 1845).
This represented the sovereigns who reigned over the County of Flanders.
Inter alia Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy and Maria Theresa of Austria,
Holy Roman Empress.

With this picture I want to wish you all a very happy weekend and a good
start of the brand new week. I'd like to thank you for your nice comments,
the likes and the reshares on Google+ and on Twitter.
