Leopold was born on April 9th. 1835 in Brussels.

He married Archduchess Marie Henriette of Austria.


It was a dynastic match but not a love match.

Together they had 4 children:

Louise who married prince Philipp of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha
Leopold, who died young
Stéphanie who married Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria 
(son of Emperor Franz-Jozef & Sisi)
Clémentine who married Prince Napoléon Victor Jérôme Frédéric Bonaparte

Affairs

King Leopold II had several mistresses. The most famous was a prostitute, 
Caroline (Blanche) Delacroix. The King had two illegitimate sons with her.

Congo

King Leopold was the founder and sole owner of Congo Free State, 
now known as
the Democratic Republic of the Congo. 

The adventure of the Congo Free State was a financial disaster till rubber 
and ivory was discovered.

Later there came a huge criticism of the high violations of the human rights.

The builder

Commissioned by King Leopold II, huge structures were realized in 
Belgium inter alia
in Brussels, Laeken, Ostend, Antwerp etc....

Death

On December 17th. 1909, King Leopold died.
