Her parents were Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria and Maria Anna of Bavaria.

In 1635, Archduchess Maria Anna of Austria married her maternal uncle,
Maximilian I of Bavaria.

Archduchess Maria Anna was often described as clever, cautious, energetic,
and experienced in matters of financial administration. 
She also was very interested in politics. 

After the death of Maximilian I she took  regency for her eldest son
Ferdinand Maria.
