The Royal Wedding of Prince Laurent of Belgium
On 12 April 2003 the Royal wedding of Prince Laurent of Belgium and Claire Coombs took place at the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels.
Prince Laurent is the youngest son of King Albert II of Belgium and Queen Paola (born Paola Ruffo di Calabria).
Claire Coombs is a daughter of Nicolas Coombs, a businessman born in the United Kingdom, and Nicole Mertens (a Belgian).
Princess Claire wore a beautiful white dress designed by Natan. The dress had lots of lace, which was to honour one of the oldest handicrafts of Belgium.
The wedding took place with a clear blue sky and under a bright sun. It started at 9.40. Then the bride and groom and their parents left the Royal Palace of Belgium in Brussels to the Town Hall. There the
civil ceremony took place. After the ceremony, the royal couple greeted the people from the balcony of the Town Hall at the Grand Place of Brussels.
Princess Astrid, the sister of the groom was absent, because at that moment she was pregnant. She could give birth every day.
Around 11.10 the procession went to the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula. There the wedding for the church took place. Cardinal Godfried Danneels gave his blessings to their wedding but
Guy Gilbert, a personal friend of Prince Laurent, held the sermon.
After the ceremony in the cathedral the couple greeted the people on the balcony of the Royal Palace in Brussels. Afterwards there was a huge lunch. Due to the war in Iraq, the court decided to not allow
camera's at the luncheon.
There were around 200 guests. Among the royal guests were:
- ducal family of Luxembourg;
- Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden
- Princess Madeleine of Sweden.
- Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien of The Netherlands.
and many more
A few days later, on Sunday, Prince Laurent and Princess Claire attended a thanksgiving ceremony at the Marollen (a well-known working class neighborhood in Brussels).
