Christmas day was in ancient times a popular day for lavish coronation ceremonies. On 25 December 800 Charlemagne was crowned Roman Emperor in the Old St. Peter's Basilica in Rome by Pope Leo III. In 1076, Boleslaw II of Poland was crowned at the Gniezno Cathedral in Poland. In 1100 Baldwin I became King of Jerusalem. The ceremony took place at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.
