Historical Hotels - Palace Hotel in Copenhagen - Denmark

From 2005 till 2009, the hotel was runned by the Starwood chain. Now the Scaldis Hotel group is the owner of this magnificent historical  building.

OTD February 28th. 1941 Alfonso XIII of Spain

Alfonso was born on May 17th. 1886 at Royal Palace of Madrid. He was the posthumous son of Alfonso XII of Spain, who had died in November 1885, and became King upon his birth.  Five days later he was carried in a solemn court procession with a Golden Fleece round his neck and was baptised with water specially brought from the River Jordan in Palestine. His mother, Maria Christina of Austria, served as his regent until his sixteenth birthday. During the regency, in 1898, Spain lost its colonial rule over Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines to the United States as a result of the Spanish–American War. Alfonso became seriously ill during the 1889–1890 pandemic. His health deteriorated around 10 January 1890 and doctors reported his condition as the flu attacked his nervous system leaving the young king in a state of indolence. He eventually recovered. Princess Marie Adélaïde never married. There were no Consorts available because she had to marry someone with Royal Blood. She found solace in music. There Princess Marie Adélaïde was welcomed by Queen Maria Carolina of Naples (sister of Queen Marie-Antoinette and Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria. Princess Marie Adelaïde of France died on February 27th. 1800 in Triëst (Italy).

Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria was born on February 26th. 1746 in Vienna. Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria Source picture: Wikipedia Her parents were Francis I, Holy emperor and Maria Theresa of Austria. She was the sister of: Emperor Leopold II of Austria;  Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples;  and Marie Antoinette, Queen of France. Royal Destination - Claremont House - United Kingdom

Source picture: Wikipedia In 1816 it was bought as Royal Mansion by King George IV for his daughter Princess Charlotte and her husband Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Queen Victoria was a frequent visitor of Claremont House. Her mother was the sister of Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. This Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha stayed at Claremont House till 1831. Then he became King of Belgium. Queen Victoria lent the house to the exiled King Louis Philippe I of France and his wife Maria Amalia. They were the parents-in-law of King Leopold of Belgium. In 1809 he married Princess Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily.  Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily Source picture: Wikipedia They had 10 children. King Louis Philippe I of France supported the Belgian Revolution in 1830. Then Belgium separated from The Netherlands. In 1832, the eldest daughter of King Louis Philippe I of France, Louise-Marie,  married King Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (the first King of Belgium). In 1848, King Louis Philippe I of France went on exile in England.  He died on August 26th. 1850 in Claremont (United Kingdom). His remains (and those of his wife) were taken to Dreux in France. 

OTD February 22nd. 1371 David II of Scotland

She was 7 years old, he only 4! 1329   He became King of Scots. He aged around 5 years! They were crowned in 1331. During the minority of David II, Scotland was guardened by Thomas Randolph, 1st. Earl of Moray.  1333   David II and his wife fled to France after a lost battle. 1346 David II attacked England. @ the Battle of Neville's Cross he was defeated and taken captive but he could return to Scotland.  1362 Joan of The Tower died. 1364 David II remarried Margaret Drummond. They divorced in 1370. He died in 1371 in Edinburgh. He was the last male of the House of Bruce.

Charles Emmanuel III (in Italian: Carlo Emanuele III) of Sardinia was born on April 27th. 1701 in Turin (Italy). His maternal grandparents were Prince Philippe of France and Princess Henrietta Anna (daughter of King Charles I of England).  Charles Emmanuel III married three times. His wives died all before their 30th. B-Day.: - Anne Christine of Sulzbach. - Elisabeth Therese of Lorraine. - Polyxena of Hesse-Rotenburg. In 1730, Charles Emmanuel III became King of Sardinia. He was very intelligent and also an art lover. Prince Henry Frederick died unexpectedly on November 6th. 1612 of  typhoid fever.

Treetuesday - Three Corners Hotel in Marsa Alam - Egypt

The Treetuesday picture of this week was taken in 2010 in front of the Three Corners Fayrouz Hotel in Marsa Alam (Egypt). This is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been in Egype. OTD February 18th. 1743 Anna Maria Luisa de Medici

Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici was born on August 11th. 1667 in Florence (Italy). Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici Source picture: Wikipedia She was the only daughter of Cosimo III de' Medici and Marguerite Louise d'Orléans (a niece of King Louis XIII of France). Anna Maria Luisa de'Medici was popular on the wedding market. First she was a possible bride of Louis of France (son of King Louis XIV of France). Elisabeth was the daughter of Karl-Theodor, Duke in Bavaria and Infanta Maria Josepha of Portugal. Her father was the brother of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi). Albert I and Elisabeth had 3 children: Leopold (Later King Leopold III of Belgium). Charles (Later Regent of Belgium). Marie-José (Later the last Queen of Italy). Albert I died on February 17th. 1934 in Marche-les-Dames in Belgium.  He fell, while climbing a rock. Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia was born on February 16th. 1786 in Saint Petersburg. Maria Pavlovna of Russia Source picture: Wikipedia Her parents were Tsar Paul I of Russia and Maria Feodorovna. She was the sister of Tsar Alexander I of Russia and Anna Pavlovna (later Queen Consort of The Netherlands). In 1804, Maria Pavlovna of Russia married Charles Frederick, Hereditary  Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. In Weimar (Germany) she was a patron of art and sciences. Maria Pavlovna of Russia died on June 23rd. 1859.

Ferdinand II married twice. The first time he chose Maria Anna of Bavaria. This was not his mother but the daughter of William V, Duke of Bavaria and Renata of Lorraine. During that time it was a suspicious death. People thought that she was poisoned. Now it is proven that Lucrezia died of tuberculosis. 

Today in History - February 13th.1904 - Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark

Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark was born on February 13th. 1904 in Athens (Greece). Her paternal grandparents were George I of Greece and Olga Konstantinovna of Russia. Her maternal grandparents were Frederick III, German Emperor and  Victoria, Princess Royal.  Through Victoria, Princess Royal, Irene of Greece and Denmark was a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria of The United Kingdom. In 1939, Princess Irene married Prince Aimone, Duke of Aosta and Duke of Spoleto. They had one child. Prince Aimone, Duke of Aosta Source picture: Wikipedia Croatia In 1941, Prince Aimone was proclaimed King of the independent state of Croatia.  The Royal never set one foot on the territory. In 1943 he abdicated. Princess Irene died on April 15th. 1974 in Italy.

Marie Louise of Orléans was born on March 26th. 1662 at the Palais Royal in Paris. Her grandfathers were King Louis XIII of France and King Charles I of England. In 1679, Marie of Orléans married Charles II of Spain. After horse riding on February 11th. 1689, she felt a strong pain.  She died the following night (February 12th.).

Treetuesday - Palmtrees in Boa Vista - Cape Verde

Boa Vista - View @ Riu Karamboa My 'Treetuesday' picture is taken in Boa Vista.  This isle is a part of the Republic of Cabo Verde.  I found it a nice holiday destination. The isle is barren but fairly pristine. During my visit in 2012 there weren't a lot of hotels yet at Boa Vista.  However, in the near future a lot of hotels will be built on the isle. Boa Vista is barren, so these palmtrees are cultivated.  The picture shows a part of the Riu Karamboa Resort and in the distance Sal Rei (Capital of Boa Vista). What's the Royal Connection? The picture hasn't a Royal Connection at all. But the isles of Cape Verde were discovered by António de Noli. This was a nobleman and navigator. António de Noli was appointed by the Portuguese King Alfonso V. Alfonso V, King of Portugal Source picture: Wikipedia Since 1975, Cape Verde is independent and became a republic.

Johann Maria Franz Placidus was born on October 5th.1840. Johann II, Prince of Liechtenstein Source picture: Wikipedia His parents were Aloys II of Liechtenstein and Countess Franziska Kinsky. In 1858, Johann II became Prince of Liechtenstein. Liechtenstein is a small but rich German-Speaking country bordered by  Austria and Switzerland. The capital of Liechtenstein is Vaduz.  Johann II died on February 11th. 1929. Johann II wasn't married. His brother Franz I succeeded him.
