The marriage took place in Munich (Germany). Elisabeth was the daughter of Karl-Theodor, Duke in Bavaria and Infanta Maria Josepha of Portugal. Her father was the brother of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi).
Albert I and Elisabeth had 3 children:
Leopold (Later King Leopold III of Belgium).
Charles (Later Regent of Belgium).
Marie-José (Later the last Queen of Italy).
Albert I died on February 17th. 1934 in Marche-les-Dames in Belgium. He fell, while climbing a rock. His death shocked the world. He was deeply mourned in Belgium as abroad. There also were various speculations about his death.
Each year on 17 February the deceased members of the Belgian Royal Family are commemorated. Even in my hometown Sint-Niklaas the flags near the Town Hall are flown at half-mast in quiet remembrance.
