The Gileppe Dam was built in the 19th. century to ensure the water supply for
Verviers, which became then the Wool center of Belgium. Wool was imported
through Antwerp and washed at Verviers.
The construction works of the Gileppe Dam began in 1868 and lasted 10 years.
On July 28th. 1878 the Dam was inaugurated by King Leopold II of Belgium.
On the picture you can see a huge lion sculpture (made by Antoine-Félix Bouré).
The Lion watches to the Kingdom of Prussia (which was then 5 km from the
Gileppe Dam).
