Queen Elisabeth Music Competition

Each year, from the end of May till the begin of June the
Queen Elisabeth Music Competition takes place in Belgium.
The 2019's edition is about Violin.



 History

This prestigious music competition was founded by Queen Elisabeth of
Belgium. She was the wife of King Albert I of Belgium, both heroes from
World War I.

First the contest was named after Eugène Ysaÿe, later it was named
after Queen Elisabeth.

Ysaÿe was conductor at the royal court of Belgium.





 How does the competion work?

The competition takes place in Brussels and offers a great chance to young
musicians (piano and violin) and singers. In 2017 there was for the first
time a contest for cellists.

The Queen Elisabeth Music Competition is one of the most demanding
music contests of the world. After the semi-finals the finalists are
isolated from the world for one week. This happens at the Music Chappel
of Queen Elisabeth in Waterloo. The finalists may not receive visitors
there. They have to study.

The preliminaries take place at the Flagey Building in Brussels.

Most of the Final Concerts take place at the Palace of the Bozar in
Brussels, the capital of Belgium. The final sessions will be broadcasted
on radio, television and internet . Later a cd is to be produced.

Members of the Jury will be receieved each year at the Royal Palace of
Belgium for a dinner.

The Queen Elisabeth Music Competition always has been important for the
Belgian royal family. First it was of course Queen Elisabeth who presided
over this contest. Later it was the task of Queen Fabiola of Belgium and
nowadays, Queen Mathilde forfills this beautiful duty with pleasure.


The winner of the competition of 2019 is Stella Chen (from the United
States of Amerika) . More about her on this link.

On 14 May 2022 Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan passed away at the age of 73. Family Khalifa was born on 7 September 1948 at Qasr Al-Muwaiji, Al Ain, in Abu Dhabi (then part of the Trucial States), the eldest son of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Hassa bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan Education   He was a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
