1 November 1999 Official US State visit in Oslo
On 1 November 1999, Bill Clinton then President of the United States
traveled to Oslo in Norway on the occasion of an official State Visit.
It was the first official visit to Norway by a US president.
History
The American Revolution of 1776 had a huge impact to the country of
Norway. It was no secret that the constitution of the USA served as an
example for the own constitution of Norway in 1814.
There is even much more. From 1825 till 1940 many Norwegians
emigrated to the USA. Around 850.000 Norwegians found their new
home in the United States of America.
The friendly state of bilateral relationship was reinforced when King
Harald V of Norway hosted the visit of US President Bill Clinton
on 1 November 1999.
Main participants of the State Visit
Bill Clinton (born on 19 August 1947)
was the 42nd President of the United States of America.
His presidency lasted from 20 January 1993 till 20 January 2001.
During his presidency there was a long period of peace in the USA.
Although Clinton ordered US military intervention in the Bosnian
and Kosovo wars. He also signed the Iraq Liberation Act in
opposition to Saddam Hussein.
He participated in the 2000 Camp David Summit to advance the
Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and assisted the Northern Ireland
peace process.
But his presidency caused lots of scandals too, when several women
publicly accused Bill Clinton of sexual miscoduct. Additionally
some commentators characterized Clinton's sexual relationship
with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky as predatory
non-consensual, despite the fact that Lewinsky called the relationship
consensual at the time, because of the vast power differential between
a 22-year old intern and the president of the USA.
King Harald of Norway (born on 21 February 1937) is the son of
King Olav V of Norway and Princess Märtha of Sweden. Since
17 January 1991 he is the ruling monarch of Norway. King Harald's
leadership during Norwegian national crises such as New Year's Day
Storm and the 2011 attacks has been met with both national and
international acclaim.
The other people on the picture are: Princess Märtha Louise of
Norway, daughter of King Harald and Queen Sonja.
Queen Sonja (born on 4 July 1937) married on 29 August 1968
in Oslo to then Crown Prince Harald of Norway. They have 2
children. Queen Sonja established the Queen Sonja International
Music Competition in 1988. She also is a keen photographer and
she is very interested in art.
It is so nice that only one picture with a European royal family and a
US president brings back so many memories.
