A royal visit in Benidorm, Spain

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain visited Benidorm, the famous
holiday resort at the Costa Blanca, during their tour on 3 July 2020.

They did this to promote the Spanish tourism, just as other royals did
in their countries, inter alia King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium.

Of course Benidorm is well-known for his mass tourism and less for its
royal history, but, nevertheless I've found some lovely royal traces.

Benidorm Spain

History

Since 1925, Benidorm had been a tourist destination in Spain, when its
port was extended and the first hotels were built. In the 1950's there was
a boom of tourism in Benidorm. People from Madrid like(d) to come
to this place at the Costa Blanca.

Benidorm Beach

Today it is known for its hotel industry, its beaches and it skyscrapers
and it receives many tourists from everywhere. This is the recent history,
but Benidorm played an important role during the ancient times.

Benidorm Buildings

Already in 3000 BC there were settlements in and around Benidorm and
there are remaining traces of the Romans. With the arrival of the Moors,
the population started to grow, especially during the Umayad dynasty.

Benidorm Spain

King James I of Aragon reconquered the region in 1245 and Benidorm
was officially known in 1325.

Due to its strategic position Benidorm could stop the rising power of
Admiral Roger of Lauria, Lord of Altea. However its location caused
some troubles too, Benidorm was hit by  the Ottomans and Barbary
pirates.

Later fishing became popular in Benidorm, they caught Tuna and the
fisherman caused an improvement of the local agriculture and economy.

Nowadays

Nowadays lots of tourists like to come to Benidorm due to its climate
with mild winters and hot summers.  It enjoys more than 3,000 hours of
sunshine per year.

Visiting Benidorm

Benidorm is located at the Costa Blanca in Spain. There are flights to the
airport of Alicante, and then you have to take a bus or taxi. I like to visit
Benidorm in the winter, then the weather is not always that warm or nice
but there are less tourists than during the summer.
