His parents were Prince Emanuele Filiberto, 2nd. Duke of Aosta, and
Princess Hélène of Orléans.
His grandfather was King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy.

Prince Amedeo received his education in Oxford (United Kingdom). There
he cultivated British mannerisms and he also spoke Oxford English.

During World War I, Prince Amedeo entered the Italian army. He fought
with the artillery. However in 1921 he left the army and traveled widely in
Africa.

On July 4th. 1931, by the death of his father, Prince Amedeo became
Duke of Aosta.

In 1932 he entered the Italian Air Forces and became a pilot.

When Italy declared war on the United Kingdom and France on
June 10th 1940, the Duke of Aosta became commander of the Italian
forces in what is known as the East African Campaign of World War II.

In 1941 the Italian forces were defeated by the British troops.
Prince Amedeo died on March 3rd.1942 in Nairobi (Kenya).

Family

Prince Amedeo married on November 5th. 1927 Princess Anne of Orléans,
who was his first cousin. They had 2 daughters:

Princess Margherita, who married Robert, Archduke of Austria. They are
the parents of inter alia Archduke Lorenz, who married Princess Astrid of
Belgium.

Princess Maria Christina, who married Prince Casimir of Bourbon-Two Sicilies.
They also had children.

For me this was again an interesting piece of Italian history with another link
to the Belgian Royal family.
