OTD 7 October 1471 King Frederick I of Denmark and Norway

On 7 October 1471, King Frederick (Frederik) I of Denmark was born
at Haderslevhus castle in Denmark.

Family

He was the younger son of King Christian I of Denmark, Norway and
Sweden and of Dorothea of Brandenburg.

Frederick was a member of the noble house of Oldenburg, more see
this link.

Love and Marriage

King Frederick I of Denmark married on 10 April 1502 to Anna of
Brandenburg, the daughter of John Cicero, Elector of Brandenburg and
Margaret of Thuringia. The couple had two children:

- King Christian III of Denmark and Norway
- Dorothea of Denmark who married to Albert, Duke of Prussia.

Anna of Brandenburg died on 5 May 1514, when she was only 26 years old.
On 9 October 1518 Frederick married Sophie of Pomerania. They had 6
children together.

Reign

After the death of his father, the underage Frederick was elected co-Duke
of Schleswig and Holstein. The other co-Duke was his elder brother King
John of Denmark.

When his brother, King John died, a group of nobles had offered the throne
to Frederick, but he declined, rightly believing that the majority of the Danish
nobility would be loyal to his nephew prince Christian.

In 1523, King Christian II of Denmark, Norway and Sweden was forced by
disloyal nobles to abdicate and Frederick took the throne as King Frederick I.

Frederick played a central role in the spread of the Lutheran teaching in
Denmark. He was made the solemn protector of Roman Catholicism in
his country. In that role, he asserted his right to select bishops for the Roman
Catholic dioceses in the country. Frederick ordered that Lutherans and Roman
Catholics shared the same churches and encouraged the first publication of
the Bible in Danish language.

During his reign, Frederick was skillful enough to prevent all-out warfare
between Protestants and Roman Catholics.

In 1532, Frederick I succeeded in capturing Christian II who had tried to
make a political come-back in Norway.

Death

King Frederick I of Denmark and Norway died on 10 April 1533
in Gottorp at the age of 61. He was buried in the Scleswig Cathedral.

After Frederick's death, tensions between Roman Catholics  and
Protestants rose to fever which would result in the Count's Feud (War).
