OTD 5 October 1377 Louis II of Anjou

Louis II  was born on 5 October 1377 in Toulouse as the son of Louis I of Anjou,
Duke of Anjou and King of Naples. His mother was Marie of Blois.
He was a member of the House of Valois-Anjou.

Duty

On 20 September 1384, Louis II became Duke of Anjou. However most towns
in the Provence revolted after the death of his father. His mother then raised an
army and they travelled from town to town, to gain support.

In 1387, Louis was recognized as Count of Provence. In 1409 he founded the
university in Aix-en-Provence (France).

In 1386, Ladislaus, the son of Charles of Durazzo was expelled from Naples
soon after his father died.

On 1 November 1389, Louis II was crowned King of Naples by the Avignonese
antipope Clement VII. He took possession of Naples the following year. In turn
he was ousted by his rival in 1399.

In 1409 Louis liberated Rome from Ladislaus' occupation. However in 1411
Louis lost his Neapolitan support and he had to retire. His claim to Naples passed
to his son, Louis III.

Love and marriage

In 1400, Louis II of Naples married his first cousin Yolande of Aragon in
Arles. This gave him a possibility of inheriting the throne of Aragon through her
right.

The couple had 5 surviving children:

- Louis III of Anjou;
- René of Anjou;
- Charles of Anjou;
- Marie of Anjou who married in 1422 King Charles VII of France;
- Yolande of Anjou, who married Philip I, Duke of Brabant and then
Francis I, Duke of Brittany.

France

Louis II of Naples and his wife joined the Armagnac Faction instead of the
Burgundians.

Death

Louis II died on 29 April 1417 at the age of 39 at the Château d'Angers in
Anjou.
