One of the most instagrammed places of the world is without no doubt
the Plaza de España in Seville, Spain.

The Spain Square, as it is called in English is a place, located in the
Maria Luisa Park in Seville Spain.

It is a landmark and a pretty example of the Regionalism Architecture
with mixed elements of the Renaissance Revival and the Moorish
Revival.

It also has a nice, royal history.

Some royal history

In 1929 the Ibero-American Exposition World's Fair took place in
Spain. A lot of new developments were created mostly in Barcelona
and Seville. King Alfonso XIII of Spain kept a close eye on all the
building plans of the World's Fair.

So 1929 was an important year for Seville, then the city hosted the Ibero-
American Exposition World's Fair, located in the celebrated Maria Luisa
Park.

The park gardens were designed by Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier. The
entire southern city was redeveloped into an expanse of gardens and
grand boulevards. It is really nice to walk there.

The Plaza de España was designed by Aníbal Gonzále, a great
architect from Seville. It became his masterpiece.

The Plaza de España complex is a huge half-circle with buildings
around the edge accessible over the moat by numerous bridges,
representing the four ancient Kingdoms of Spain.

The walls of the Plaza have many tiled alcoves, each representing a
different province of Spain.

Nowadays the Plaza de España mainly consists of Government
buildings.

It also has been used as a filming location with scenes of inter alia:
- Lawrence of Arabia (1962);
- Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002);
- The Dictator (2012).

A visit

I visited the Plaza de España during a trip to Seville, Spain in June 2018.
Seeing this wonderful place, it is a bit sad that there weren't World's Fairs
anymore in Europe and the World. I hope this nice tradition will come
back soon.
