OTD 2 June 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II

On 2 June 1953 the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took place at
Westminster Abbey.

When King George VI, Elizabeth's father died on  6 February 1952,
Elizabeth was proclaimed Queen at the age of 25.

On 2 June 1953, Queen Elizabeth took the oath, was anointed with the
holy oil, invested with the robes and relegia.

Elizabeth was proclaimed queen of the United Kingdom, Australia,
New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, Canada and Ceylon
(now Sri Lanka).

It was the first British coronation to be televised. The preparations took
at least 14 months and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh became
the chairman of the Coronation commission.

Norman Hartnell was contacted to make the coronation gown and the
other outfits for the royal family.

When Queen Mary, Elizabeth's grandmother died on 24 March 1953,
she stipulated in her will that the coronation should take place on
2 June 1953.

Before the coronation there was a long procession and along the
route there were soldiers, airmen and women from across the
British Empire and the Commonwealth.

There were many royal guests from other countries present at the
coronation inter alia:
