OTD 5 July 1717 Peter III of Portugal
Peter III of Portugal (Pedro in Portuguese) was born at 12 o'clock - noon-
on 5 July 1717 in the Ribeira Palace in Lisbon.
Family
His parents were King João V of Portugal and Maria Anna of Austria.
His paternal grandparents were:
- King Peter II of Portugal;
- Maria Sophia of Neuburg.
His maternal grandparents were:
- Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor;
- Eleanor Magdalene of Neuburg.
Eleanor Magdalene of Neuburg was a sister of Queen Maria Sofia
of Portugal. It's a family affair!
Pedro was a younger brother of King José I of Portugal
Love and Marriage
In 1760, Pedro married his niece Maria, Princess of Brazil, because
she was heiress presumptive to the throne. According to custom Pedro
thus became King of Portugal in the right of his wife.
The royal couple had 6 children, some of them died young but their son
became João VI in 1816.
Reign
Pedro made no attempt to participate in government affairs, he spent his
time by hunting or doing religious exercises.
He defended the high nobility of Portugal by demanding the restitution
of their confiscated properties.
Pedro III was moderately friendly toward the Jesuits, because he had
taken his education from the Jesuits. However Pope Clement XIV
ordered the Jesuits suppressed across Europe in 1773.
France and Austria
King Louis XV ruled in France during that time.
Maria Therea was Holy Roman Empress from 1745 till 1765. She was
succeeded by her son, who ruled as Joseph II, from 1765 till 1790.
Death
Peter III of Portugal died on 25 May 1786 at the Queluz Palace in
Portugal. He was buried at the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora
in Lisbon.
Royal history of Portugal
Although Portugal nowadays has a president, who hosted some
royal State Visites (inter alia from The Netherlands and Belgium),
Portugal, really has a nice royal history.
Everywhere in Lisbon, Porto and many other cities there are traces
from that beautiful royal history!
