OTD 24 May 1913 An important Royal wedding

On 21 May 1913, King George V arrived at Vlissingen on board of
the Royal Yacht, Victoria & Albert. Together with his wife, Queen Mary,
Lord Stamfordham (his secretary) and sir Frederick Ponsonby he walked
to a car, which brought them to the imperial train. The company was on
their way to Berlin, for attending the royal wedding of  Victoria Louisa
of Prussia and Ernstest August, Duke of Brunswick.

This important royal wedding took place on 24 May 1913. The marriage
ended a rift between the Houses of Hohenzollern and Hanover.

However it took a long time that this event took place: anydiscussions
of marriage were prolonged for months due to political concerns.
Ernest Augustus was also the heir to the Kingdom of Hanover,
which the Kingdom of Prussia annexed following the 1866 Austro-
Prussian War.

The Prussian crown prince was displeased with the match and
wished that Ernest Augustus would abdicate his rights to Hanover;
in a compromise, it was decided that, in exchange, he would
succeed to the smaller duchy of Brunswick, of which his father
was the lawful heir. The family had been barred from the
succession to Brunswick due to their claims towards
the Hanoverian kingdom.

Ernest and Victoria became engaged in Karlsruhe on 11 February 1913.

The Times described the union as akin to Romeo and Juliet,
albeit with a happier ending
.

Victoria Louise of Prusia was the daughter of Emperor Wilhelm (William)
II of Germany and Augusta Victoria of Schleswig Holstein. Victoria Louise
was a great granddaughter of Queen Victoria of The United Kingdom.

Empress Augusta Victoria took the separation from her only daughter
badly and wept.

The wedding feast included 1,200 guests from across Europe. Among the
attendees were King George V of the United Kingdom and Tsar Nicholas II
of Russia. It was the last European royal gathering for the outbreak of the
Great War.

It also was the last time that the royal cousins, King George V, Emperor
Wilhelm II and Tsar Nicolas, would see each other.
