OTD 25 January 1858 Royal wedding in England
On 25 January 1858 , Victoria, Princess Royal married her
Prince Charming Frederick of Prussia.
Crown Princess Victoria was the oldest daughter of Queen Victoria and
Prince Albert of the United Kingdom.
Prince Frederick was the son of Prince William (who became later King
of Prussia and even German Emperor) and Princess Augusta of Saxe-
Weimar-Eisenach.
A love story
Crown Princess Victoria of the United Kingdom met her future husband
in 1851 for the first time. Then Frederick, his sister Louise and their father
who became later William I, German Emperor visited the Great Exhibition
in London.
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert asked their daughter to guide Frederick
at the exhibition. The Princess was able to converse in German while the
Prince only understood a few words English.
Frederick was fascinated by the relationships among the members of the
British royal family. In London, Court life was not so frigid as in Berlin.
The more, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's relationship with their
children was complete different to the one of William and Augusta.
When Frederick returned to Germany he started a close correspondence
with Victoria, Princess Royal.
In 1855, Frederick visited Victoria and her family in Balmoral in
Scotland. He wanted to see the Princess Royal again. In Berlin the
reactions on this trip were far from positive. They wanted that Frederick
should marry a Grand Duchess of Russia.
At the time of Frederick's second visit Victoria, Princess Royal was
15 years old . The royal couple announced their engagement on
17 May 1856. In Great Britain people disapproved their engagement
because of the role of Prussia during the Crimean War. The Times
found the Hohenzollern dynasty as a miserable dynasty.
The royal wedding
The question where to hold the wedding was a cause for many protests.
To the Hohenzollern it was clear that the future King of Prussia should
marry in Berlin. However Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom insisted
that her eldest daughter must marry in her own country. Finally the
wedding of Victoria, Princess Royal and Prince Frederick of Prussia took
place on 25 January 1858 at the Chapel Royal in St. James's Palace in
London.
