Ties between the royal families of Belgium and The Netherlands

When Belgium became independent in 1830 from the
United Kingdom of The Netherlands - after a revolution -
a international compromise was made.

Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, widower of Princess Charlotte
of Wales and uncle of Queen Victoria, became the first King of Belgium
in 1831.

Then, The Netherlands were still struggling with the independence of the
Southern Part of their country.

In 1894 King Willem III of The Netherlands and Queen Emma visited
Brussels. However During the rule of King Leopold II of Belgium,
Queen Wilhelmina refused to visit her neighbors.

In March 1911 she visited Belgium. Enough attention was paid
to the arrival of the Dutch Queen.

A driving tour through a short part of Brussels took place. There was a lot
of interest on the side. Especially on the market where Queen Wilhelmina
and the Belgian King Albert got off at the town hall. Thousands of flags
hung on the facades and no less than 7,000 children 'pasted' across the
market past the royal couple.

Before World War I, Queen Wilhelmina and King Albert I of Belgium
launched a peace proposal to avoid the War ...

The ties between the two royal families became better, that was clear when
Leopold III was one of the godfathers of Princess Beatrix (who later became
Queen Beatrix).

In May 1939, Queen Wilhelmina made again an official visit to Belgium. She
was received by King Leopold III in Brussels.

According to the newspapers from then:

BRUSSELS, 23 May - King Leopold today received Queen Wilhelmina,
who is paying a state visit to Belgium, at the royal palace in Brussels.
The Dutch queen was warmly welcomed by the people of Brussels
and the king. The visit takes place the day after the signing of the
German-Italian military treaty in Berlin.

"Why shouldn't the small countries, which still have a hundred
million people in Europe, take an economic and moral stand
together against the moral and material decay of our era?"
said King Leopold III in his toast in honor of Queen Wilhelmina.
She replied that nothing in the current economic climate should
prevent that entente.

From 30 May till 2 June 1960 Queen Juliana of the Netherlands brought
an official State Visit to Belgium. She was received by King Baudouin in
Brussels. Queen Juliana was also accompanied by her daughter Princess
Beatrix.

On 10 March 1966, the wedding of Princess Beatrix and Prince Claus
took place. Queen Fabiola of Belgium was seen at a picture in the church.

In 1981, Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands made an official State Visit
to Belgium. She was received by King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola.

In 2005, Princess Alexia of The Netherlands was born. One of her
godmothers is Queen Mathilde of the Belgians (then Duchess of Brabant).

In 2006, Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands made her second official
State Visit to Belgium. She was received by King Albert II and Queen
Paola.

Of course there were many other events were the royal families
met each other, such as weddings and funerals.
Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands was inter alia in 2014
at the funeral of  Queen Fabiola of Belgium.

And finally, now in 2023 from June 20th till June 22nd,
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima
will make an official state visit to Belgium.

💥 Nice to know!

One of the titles of King Willem-Alexander of The Netherlands is
Viscount of Antwerp. Antwerp is one of the main cities of
Flanders. King Willem-Alexander inherited this title from
William of Orange.

👉 Family ties

King Philippe of the Belgians is a descendant of King Willem I of
The Netherlands. Yes, the one the Belgians started a revolution for...

King Philippe => King Albert II => Queen Astrid
=> Princess Ingeborg of Sweden
=> Louise of Sweden
=> Louise of The Netherlands

=> Prince Frederick of The Netherlands

=> King Willem I of The Netherlands.

So, both royal families are not only colleagues or friends, they also have
family ties.

More ties

The Academy Palace in Brussels was built for King Willem II of
The Netherlands. However due to the revolution it received another
function. More about the palace on this link

Today, Belgian law still prohibits Belgian royals from marrying
members of the Dutch royal family. For example, Crown Princess Amalia
can not marry Prince Gabriel or Prince Emmanuel if she wants to...

But I'm looking forward to see pictures of the State Visit!
