State visits from U.S.A Presidents to the United Kingdom
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania of the United States will pay a state visit to the
United Kingdom from September 17th. till September 19th. 2025 ✨ I wondered how and when the previous state visits of American Presidents to the United Kingdom took place. So, I made a short overview from the most interesting visits.
Early encounters
The first official visit of a sitting U.S.A President to the United Kingdom was by Woodrow Wilson in December 1918, just after the end of World War I. Though not a formal state visit hosted by the monarch, Wilson’s trip marked an important moment: the United States had emerged as a global power, and Britain welcomed its wartime ally with enthusiasm.

Post-War diplomacy
The first true State Visit of an American President to Britain took place in 1959, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower was hosted by Queen Elizabeth II. This visit came at a time when both nations were working closely in NATO and in the Cold War context. The pomp of Buckingham Palace receptions symbolized shared values and strategic unity.
👉 President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy had a private dinner at Buckingham Palace on June 5, 1961, however President Kennedy made not an official State Visit to the United Kingdom.
The 1970s–1990s: Warmth and symbolism
In 1977, President Jimmy Carter visited the United Kingdom and famously kissed the Queen Mother on the lips in a gesture that caused both amusement and surprise.
Ronald Reagan, much admired by the British public, forged a particularly close bond with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and his 1982 state visit underscored the Anglo-American partnership during the late Cold War.
George H.W. Bush visited in 1989, reaffirming ties just before the fall of the Berlin Wall reshaped Europe.
The new millennium
In 2003, President George W. Bush made the first full state visit by an American President to the UK at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II. This event was accompanied by both grandeur, banquets and processions and large public demonstrations, given the controversial Iraq War.
Barack Obama’s 2011 state visit included a memorable joint speech with Prime Minister David Cameron and a heartfelt address at Westminster Hall. He and First Lady Michelle Obama were warmly received, particularly for their personable and modern approach. (Remember Lady Michelle Obama put her arm around the Queen?)
Donald Trump’s 2019 state visit featured a lavish banquet at Buckingham Palace, ceremonial pageantry, and political debates in the background.
The most recent example came with President Joe Biden’s 2021 official trip, though this was not a state visit, but rather a working meeting tied to the G7 Summit. Biden has met King Charles III as well, continuing the strong transatlantic relationship.
More than ceremony
State visits are not just about glittering tiaras, carriages, and speeches. They embody the strength of the Anglo-American alliance, rooted in shared history, democratic values, and global cooperation. Each visit has reflected the mood of the time, from wartime solidarity to Cold War unity, and from 21st-century challenges to ongoing global partnerships.

For royal watchers, these moments also provide a fascinating glimpse into the ceremonial role of the monarchy, highlighting how tradition and diplomacy intertwine.
