OTD 11 July 1302 Battle of the Golden Spurs

On July 11th. 1302, the Battle of the Golden Spurs (in Dutch: Guldensporenslag) took place. This was also called the Battle of Courtrai. Opponents This battle took place between the forces of the County of Flanders and the Kingdom of France. Place The two armies met each other near Courtrai (in Dutch: Kortrijk) in West-Flanders, Belgium. Source picture: Wikipedia Results The French knights were unable to to defeat the Flemish well trained army and they suffered huge loses. The Flemish soldiers used a typical weapon from that time called "Goedendag" (1.5m long wooden shaft and topped with a steel spike). The Battle soon became known as the Battle of the Golden Spurs after the more than 500 pairs of spurs that were captured on the battlefield. Carlos, Prince of Asturias was born on July 8th. 1545 in Valladolid, Spain. Family His parents were King Philip II of Spain and Maria Manuella of Portugal. He was the grandson of Emperor Charles V. Love and Marriage? In 1559, Carlos was betrothed to Elizabeth of Valois, the eldest daughter of King Henry II of France and Catherine de' Medici. Due to political reasons she married Carlos' father, King Philip II of Spain. Three other brides were proposed to Carlos: Mary, Queen of Scots; Margaret of Valois; Anna of Austria (who should later marry to ..... King Philip II of Spain.) Life In 1560, Carlos was declared heir-apparent of the Castilian throne and later to the Crown of Aragon as well. He also became knight in the order of the Golden Fleece. Joan of England was born on 5 July 1321 in the Tower of London. Family Her parents were King Edward II of England and Isabella of France. Her siblings were the later King Edward III of England, John of Eltham, Earl of Cornwall and Eleanor of Woodstock. Love and Marriage On 17 July 1328, Joan of England married the future  King David II of Scotland. At that time she was seven years old he only four years!
