Above the church rises the vertical flank of the rock with on top the citadel.
The current fort was built in 1815 but it replaced a site founded in 1051, when
the region was under the rule of the Prince Bishop of Liège. The citadel overlooks
the city and the Meuse

The history for Dinant wasn't always that good. In 1466, Charles the Bold,
the son of Philip the Good of Burgundy, punished the citizens of Dinant
after an uprising. He ordered to throw 800 burghers into the Meuse and
setting fire into the city.
