Today in History - December 25th. 1584 - Margaret of Austria, who became Queen Consort of Spain and Portugal

On December 25th. 1584, Margaret of Austria was born in Graz.

Her parents were Charles II (son of Ferdinand I) of Austria and
Maria Anna of Bavaria.

Her elder brother was Archduke Ferdinand who became in 1619
Emperor of Austria.

Two of her sisters became Queen of Poland.

Margaret married her first cousin Philip (III & II), King of Spain
and Portugal.

They had a close relationship and she became an influential figure at her 
husband's Court.

Margaret was an important patron of the arts.
