Her parents were King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria and Caroline of Baden.

On November 4th. 1824, Sophie of Bavaria married Franz Karl, Archduke of Austria.
They had 6 children.

She had a huge ambition to bring her son Franz Joseph on the Austrian throne.
Therefore, Sophie, sometimes was called the only man at court.

During the Revolution of 1848 she persuaded her husband to give up his rights
to the throne in favour of their son Franz Joseph. When he became emperor, Sophie
was the power behind the scenes. Now she mostly was known for her extremely
controlling relationship with Franz Joseph's famed wife Sisi.

Sophie never came over the shock caused by the death of her son Maximilian I,
who was emperor in Mexico. He was executed in  1867.

She died of a brain tumor on May 28th. 1872.

* Did you know that Archduchess Sophie was the godmother of
Marie Henriette of Austria (who later became Queen of Belgium). *
