OTD 6 June 1944 Start of Operation Overlord D-day
Operation Overlord was the code name for the Battle of Normandy, when the allied
troops launched a successful invasion of the German Occupied Western Europe.
This big operation started on June 6th. 1944 with the Normandy landings
(now known as D-Day).
In November 1943 the decision was taken to undertake a cross-channel
invasion.
Two important generals were appointed:
Dwight D. Eisenhower, a five star general of the American Army during
World War II, who became later president of the USA (1953 -1961)
Sir Bernard Montgomery, nicknamed "Monty' was a senior officer of the
British Army.
