OTD 6 August 1689 Sophia Dorothea of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg

Princess Sophia Dorothea of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg was
born on September 28th. 1636 in Glücksburg.

Glücksburg is a small town in Northern Germany, where the family
Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg ruled. Members of that noble
family became King/Queen of Denmark and Norway. 
Even Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and husband of Queen Elizabeth
of the United Kingdom is a descendant.

Princess Sophia Dorothea claimed Royal blood due to her great-grandfather 
King Christian III of Denmark, although her parents 
Philip, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg- Glücksburg and 
Sophia Hedwig of Saxe-Lauenburg, were of much lower rank. 

Sophia Dorothea married twice. In 1653 she married Christian Louis, Duke of
Brünswick-Lüneburg (brother-in-law of King Frederick III of Denmark). 
They had no children. He died in 1665.

She married Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg in 1668. 
In 1676 Sophia Dorothea even became commander of her own regiment.

Princess Sophia Dorothea died on August 6th. 1689 in Karlsbad.
She was buried in the Berlin Cathedral. The Dorotheenstadt, a neighbourhood
of Berlin was called after her.
