Rome, the capital of Italy, still has lots of palaces, although the Italian monarchy
was abolished in 1946.

One of those palaces is located on the Quirinal hill and it was named after it:
the Quirinal Palace.

An amazing royal history

The location on the Quirinal hill was used since Roman times. They built temples
dedicated from Flora to Quirinus (after whom the hill was named).

During the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great, a complex of Roman
baths was built here.

The Quirinal was the highest hill in Rome and the place became a popular
location for Roman patricians, who built here their luxurious villas.

In 1583, Pope Gregory XIII ordered to built a papal summer residence. He
wanted to find a great location which was away from the humidity and stench
coming from the river Tiber and the unhealthy conditions of the Lateran Palace.
Of course, he chose the Quirinal hill as one of the most suitable locations in
Rome.

However on this site, there was already a small villa owned by the Carafa
Family and rented to Luigi d'Este. This fact didn't interrupt the pope.

He commissioned the architect Ottaviano Mascherino to build a palace
with porticoed parallel wings and an internal court. Unfortunately this big
project wasn't finished at the death of Pope Gregory XIII in 1585.

Pope Paul V commissioned the completion of the work on the main building
of the palace.

Finally the palace could be used as a location for papal conclaves. These took
place in 1823,1829,1831 and 1846.

In 1871, Rome became the capital of the new Kingdom of Italy.
The Quirinal Palace became the official Royal Residence of the Kings of Italy,
although some monarchs, notably King Victor Emmanuel III (King from 1900-
1946), actually lived in a private residence elsewehere. The Quirinale then
was used as an office and for state functions.

After 1946 the palace was used for the official residence and the workplace
of the Presidents of the Italian Republic.

In 1615 or 1616, a diplomatic delegation from Persia visited the Quirinal Palace
in Rome, Italy. This wonderful painting was made by an unknown painter.

On 9 July 2009, President Obama of the United States visited Rome and Italy.
Of course he had a meeting with the Italian President at the beautiful
Quirenal Palace.
