10 October 1567 Catherine Michelle of Spain
On 10 October 1567 in Madrid, Spain, a very royal girl was born.
She was called Catherine Michelle of Spain (in Spanish: Catalina
Micaela de Austria).
Family
Her parents were King Philip II of Spain and Elisabeth of Valois.
She was the sister of Isabella Clara who was the Governor of the
Habsburg Netherlands.
Just as her family, Catherine Michelle of Spain was a member of
the noble House of Habsburg.
Childhood
People described Catherine Michelle as beautiful, intelligent,
arrogant and well aware of her high social status.
Catherine Michelle had a good relationship with her father
King Philippe II and the two exchanged letters after her
marriage.
Love and Marriage
On 11 March 1585 the marriage between Catherine of Spain and
Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy took place in Zaragoza.
Her husband suggested the marriage as a way of gaining Spanish
support for his plans to expand Savoy on the coast of the then
weakened France.
On 10 August 1585 the royal couple made their entrance to
Turin in Savoy (nowadays Italy).
The couple would have 10 children.
Duty
Catherine Michelle of Spain was at the beginning unpopular
because of her arrogance and her attempts to introduce Spanish
pomp, ceremony and way of dress to the Court in Turin.
Afterwards she gained respect because of her political and
diplomatical skill, which she used to defend the autonomy of
Savoy against Spain. She refused the Spanish offer to install a
Spanish garrison in Turin.
She had a great influence on Charles Emmanuel I and she even
changed him for the better.
Catherine Michelle also served as regent several times during the
absence of her husband on military campaigns.
She also benefited cultural life in Savoy and she founded many
new buildings including an art gallery.
She invited several artists such as Torquato, Tasso, Marini, Tassoni
and Botero.
Death
Catherine Michelle of Spain, Duchess of Savoy died on 6 November 1597
at Turin at the age of 30 after she had miscarried earlier that year.
