OTD 1 August 1924 King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia
On 1 August 1924 (some sources said he could be older),
Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was born at Riyadh.
Then it was a part of the Sultanate of Nejd. Now it is of course the capital
of Saudi Arabia.
Family
His parents were Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia and Fahda bint Asi Al Shuraim.
She was one of King Abdulaziz 's spouses.
They were all members of the House of Saud.
Army
Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was made commander of the
Saudi National Gard (SANG) in 1963.
In March 1975, he became Deputy Prime Minister, which secured his
place as second in line of the throne.
Duty
On 13 June 1982, his half-brother Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud became
the new King of of Saudi Arabia, due to the death of King Khalid.
Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud became now the Crown Prince of
Saudi Arabia.
In May 2001, he made a visit to Washington (United States of America).
He also pushed for Saudi Membership for the World Trade Organization.
King
On 1 August 2005, King Fadh died and Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud
became the new ruler of Saudi Arabia. He was formally enthroned on
2 August 2005.
In November 2007, King Abdullah visited Pope Benedict XVI in the
official residence of the Pope. He was the first King of Saudi Arabia, who
visited the Vatican.
In April 2002, King Abdullah made an official state visit to the
United States of America (then George W Bush was president).
In 2009, at the summit for the world leaders, King Abdullah met
President Barack Obama.
Love and marriage
King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia had about 30 wives and he fathered
around 35 children.
Death
On 23 January 2015, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia died and he
was succeeded by his half-brother King Salman of Saudi Arabia.
His funeral took place on 23 January 2015.
A few days later there was a funeral service, this event was attended
by lots of royals and world leaders inter alia:
- King Philippe of Belgium;
- King Felipe VI of Spain;
- King Willem-Alexander of The Netherlands;
- Charles, Prince of Wales;
- Barack and Michelle Obama;
- François Hollande and many more.
