OTD 27 August 1545 Alexander Farnese
On 27 August 1545 Alexander Farnese was born at Rome in the Papal States.
Family
Alexander was the son of Duke Ottavio Farnese of Parma (a grandchild of
Pope Paul III) and Margaret of Parma, the natural daughter of Emperor
Charles V.
Alexander was a member of the noble house of Farnese.
Youth
Alexander's mother was the half-sister of King Philip II of Spain. So, he
could led a significant military and diplomatic career in the service of Spain.
He fought in the Battle of Lepanto (1571) and then in The Netherlands
against the rebels.
He accompanied his mother to Brussels, when she was appointed Governor
of the Netherlands.
Love and Marriage
In 1565 his marriage with Maria of Portugal ( a granddaughter of King
Manuel I of Portugal) was celebrated in Brussels.
Duty
In 1586, Alexander Farnese became Duke of Parma, through the death
of his father. He named his son Ranuccio as Regent.
In 1587, Farnese took Sluis for the Spanish King.
Death
Alexander Farnese died on 3 December 1592 at the age of 47 after he
was wounded during the Siege of Caudebec.
