Royal Destination Vatican Museums
One of my most amazing museum experiences took place in 2017. Then
I visited Rome and Vatican City. I never realized that the Vatican houses
so many beautiful and well known art works. Though I've seen (a part)
of the Vatican museums I really want to return once to discover more. Be
sure, you can't see all the museums in one time because there are some
20,000 art works on display.
Besides my own modest meaning, the Vatican Museums have a very
interesting history.
Some Royal History
The buildings of the Vatican Museums were once papal residences. It
was Pope Julius II, who founded the museums in the early 16th. century
(1506).
The Vatican museums are a huge complex of different pontifical museums
which started under the patronage of the Popes Clement (1769-1774) and
Pius VI (1775-1799). Later Pius VII (1800-1823) expanded lot.
As mentioned before, the Vatican Museums are a complex of interesting
places such as:
Atrio dei Quattro Cancelli,
Villa Belvedere,
Galleria dei Candelabri;
Museo Gregoriano Profano;
Museo Pio Christiano;
Museo Pio-Clementio;
Museo Chiaramonti;
Galleria Lapidaria;
Sala dei Misteri;
Galleria dei Busti;
Sistine Chapel.
There are many different kind of collections such as:
Egyptian and Assyrian art;
Greek and Roman art;
Early Medieval art;
15th-19th century art;
Modern religious art;
Lots of artists had worked for the Vatican and its Museums.
Raefaël,
Michelangelo,
Botticelli,
Ghirlandaio,
Regularly there are amazing exhibitions.
Royal visitors
Queen Silvia of Sweden and Princess Beatrix of The Netherlands
opened in 2016 the Rembrandt exhibition in the Vatican Museums.
A visit
My husband and I visited the Vatican Museums in 2017 at the begin
of December. Then it was low season, but still there was a long
waiting row. Be sure you book a ticket in advance or a skip the line
ticket. There also is a dress code: shoulders and knees must be
covered.
The pictures in this blog post are mine, all taken in 2017.
