OTD 28 September 1863 Carlos I of Portugal
28 September 1863 marks the birth of Carlos of Portugal. This royal
event took place at the Ajunda National Palace in Lisbon.
Family
Carlos was the son of King Luis I of Portugal and Queen Maria Pia.
His paternal grandparents were King Ferdinand II of Portugal (born
Saxe-Coburg and Gotha) and Queen Maria II of Portugal.
His maternal grandparents were King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy
and Adelaide of Austria.
Carlos was thus a member of the noble house of Braganza-Saxe-Coburg
and Gotha.
Youth
In 1883, Carlos traveled to the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy
on his Grand Tour.
In 1883, 1886 and 1888 he ruled as regent over Portugal, when his father
was abroad.
Love and Marriage
A son of a King, Carlos was a good match on the royal wedding market.
His first bridal candidate was one of the daughters of German Emperor
Frederick III and his wife Victoria, Princess Royal (a daughter of Queen
Victoria). The pressure of British diplomacy prevented the marriage.
Then he met Amélie of Orléans (also born on 28 september but in 1865).
She was the daughter of Philippe, Count of Paris and Marie Isabelle
of Orléans.
The royal wedding took place on 22 May 1886 and it turned out to a
happy marriage. They would have 3 children together.
Duty
On 19 October 1889, Carlos became King of Portugal. During his reign
there were troubles with the United Kingdom about the Portuguese
colonies in Africa.
At home there were financial troubles. On 14 June 1892 and again on
10 May 1902, Portugal was declared bankrupt.
Death
On 1 February 1908, the royal family of Portugal traveled back to
Lisbon by train. On their way to the royal palace, in an open carriage,
King Carlos I of Portugal was assassinated. The King died immediately.
The heir was wounded too and died the same day. So, King Carlos I
was succeeded by his younger son, Manuel II.
King Carlos I was buried at the Pantheon of the Braganzas at the
Monastery of Saõ Vincente de Fora in Lisbon.
