Who is who? The Lobkowicz family and its history

While reading about the Czech Republic, I discovered a very interesting noble family,
that dates back to the 14th. century. In fact it is one of the oldest Bohemian noble
families.

Mikulas Chudy "The Poor" (1378-1435) was a poor squire from the village of
Ujezd in Bohemia. After studying at the Charles University in Prague, he was noticed
by King Wenceslaus IV, who rewarded him for his service with the title of the
village Lobkovice. The former poor squire called himself Nicholas Lobkowicz.

During his service with the king, he captured several castles, belonging to rebellious
nobles; he was allowed to keep one, Haistejn Castle as a Hereditary possession.

Who is who?

Jan Haistejsky z Lobkowicz (1450-1517) was a diplomat who traveled to
Luxembourg in 1477 and to Rome in 1487. King Vladislaus II entrusted
him with negotiating his marriage to Mary of Burgundy. But she would
marry the later Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II.

Jan's brother Bohuslav Lobkowicz (1461-1510) was a poet, essayist and
philosopher. He was well known for his prose, letters and verses including a
satire on life in Bohemia. He was a traveler too who studied in Bologna and Ferrara.
He voyaged to Egypt and the Holy Land.  He collected more than 650 books, most
of his collection is now at the Lobkowicz Library.

Juan Caramuel y Lobkowicz (1606-1682) was a Spanish Catholic philosopher,
mathematician, architect and architectural theorist, ecclesiastic and writer.
He was later awarded a doctorate of theology by the University of Louvain (Belgium).

He was Philip IV of Spain's envoy to the court of emperor Ferdinand III, Abbot of
Melrose Scotland and much more. He published 262
works on subjects from poetry to astronomy to asceticism.

Eleonore, Princess Lobkowicz (1682-1741) was the daughter of Ferdinand August,
3rd Prince of Lobkowicz.

The family Lobkowicz was granted in 1624, by Ferdinand II the title of
Imperial Prince.

At the beginning of the 18th. century, Eleonore, Princess of Lobkowicz (1682-1741)
had the mineral spring at Bilina cleaned, leading to the town becoming a well-known
Spa. In 1701 she married Adam Franz Eusebius, hereditary Prince of Schwarzenberg.

Georg Christian Fürst von Lobkowicz (1686-1755) was a field Marshall of the
imperial forces. He commanded the Lobkowicz regiment founded during the
Thirty Years' War.

Joseph Franz Maximilian (1772-1816), the 7th. Prince Lobkowicz was a patron of
Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Georg Christian, Prince of Lobkowicz (1835-1908) was a political leader among the
conservative Bohemian nobility. He was a member of the Bohemian Diet (kind of
parliament) from 1865-1872 and from 1883-1907.

Edouard de Lobkowicz (1926-2010) was an investment banker and ambassador of
the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the husband of Princess Marie-Françoise
of Bourbon-Parma.

Stéphane de Lobkowicz, his wife Barbara d'Ursel de Lobkowicz and their daughter
Ariane de Lobkowicz-d'Ursel have served in the Brussels Parliament.

Nowadays

Nowadays there are four main branches of the Lobkowicz family:
- of Roudnice,
- Knimice,
-Dolni Berkovice,
- Melnik.

The family still lives in the Czech Republic. One of them Michal Lobkowicz
was Minister of Defence of the Czech Republic.

A lot of family members are spread around Europe (Belgium, Germany, France...)
and the world.

Conclusion

For me diving into the history of royal and noble families always is very interesting.
I'm too curious what people have done in their life and who they are / were connected
with. The family ties of the royal families are always full of surprises.

I hope you all enjoyed reading this blogpost!
