Royal Highlights June '26: A busy week for Europe’s royal families
The past week has been filled with royal celebrations, historic ceremonies and important international visits. From London to Stockholm and from Amsterdam to Brussels, royal watchers had plenty to follow.
Trooping the Colour in London
On 13 June, members of the British Royal Family gathered for the annual Trooping the Colour parade. Although King Charles III celebrated his actual birthday in November, the traditional birthday parade once again brought together senior working royals on Horse Guards Parade.
The highlight for many royal fans was the appearance of the royal family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, where they watched the traditional Royal Air Force flypast. The event remains one of the most iconic royal traditions in the world.
Sweden celebrates a double Jubilee
Also on 13 June, Sweden celebrated two remarkable milestones. The festivities honoured King Carl XVI Gustaf's 80th birthday and the golden wedding anniversary of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.
Members of the Swedish Royal Family joined the celebrations, which reflected both the King's long reign and the enduring partnership of Sweden's royal couple. The jubilee highlighted the important role the royal family continues to play in Swedish society.
The Order of the Garter
On 16 June, Windsor Castle hosted one of Britain's oldest and most prestigious ceremonies: the annual Order of the Garter service.
Founded in 1348 by King Edward III, the Order of the Garter remains the highest order of chivalry in the United Kingdom. Knights and Ladies of the Order processed through the grounds of Windsor Castle in their magnificent blue velvet robes and feathered hats before attending the service in St George's Chapel. The ceremony offered another glimpse of centuries-old traditions that continue to thrive today.
After the Order of the Garter, Royal Ascot, the horseraces took place. It was lovely to see how the royals followed the games.
Emperor Naruhito of Japan visits Europe
The second half of the week was marked by the arrival of Emperor Naruhito of Japan in Europe. At the invitation of King Willem-Alexander, the Japanese Emperor paid a state visit to the Netherlands, strengthening the long-standing friendship between both nations. The visit included ceremonial welcomes, official meetings and cultural engagements, reflecting the close ties between the Dutch and Japanese royal houses.
Immediately afterwards, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako travelled to Belgium for a state visit hosted by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. The visit underlined the warm diplomatic relations between Belgium and Japan and provided a rare opportunity to see three royal courts connected within the same week.
