Discovering the Lobkowicz Palace in Prague

Image
During my visit to Lobkowicz Palace in March 2026, I immediately understood why this palace is considered one of the hidden treasures of Prague. Nestled within the famous Prague Castle complex, the palace combines royal history, noble family traditions, art, music and centuries of European connections in a way that feels deeply personal rather than distant. Walking through its elegant halls almost feels like stepping into a living family storybook. What impressed me most was not only the beauty of the palace itself, but also the strong sense of history surrounding the Lobkowicz family . Portraits of European royals, Habsburg connections and noble alliances fill the rooms, offering a fascinating glimpse into the interconnected world of Europe’s aristocracy. As someone passionate about royal history, I loved discovering how closely the family was linked to important moments in European history. The palace dates back to the 16th century and was originally built by the noble Pernštejn fami...

The King's Trust celebrated its 50th. B-Day!

Image
Fifty years of helping young  people build a future. In 1976, the then Prince of Wales, now King Charles III, founded what would become one of the United Kingdom’s most influential youth charities: the The King’s Trust. Originally known as The Prince’s Trust, the organisation was created with a clear mission: helping vulnerable young people between the ages of 11 and 30 who were struggling with unemployment, homelessness, disability, difficulties at school or problems with the law. Nearly fifty years later, that mission remains as important as ever. The idea behind the trust was remarkably personal. At the time, the young Prince Charles used part of his naval severance pay to launch initiatives supporting disadvantaged youth. What began as a small project gradually evolved into a nationwide network offering training programmes, mentoring, grants and business support. Over the decades, the charity has grown into the leading youth organisation in the United Kingdom. More than one mil...

A royal memory aboard the SS Rotterdam

Image
With the visit of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands to the United States from April 13th to 15th, taking them to Pennsylvania, Washington D.C. and Florida,I could not help but think back to my own encounter with a much earlier royal journey between the Netherlands and America. In July 2025, I visited the elegant SS Rotterdam in Rotterdam. Walking through her interiors, I realised that this was not just a beautifully preserved ocean liner, but a ship that had quite literally carried royal history across the Atlantic. It was here that my thoughts naturally turned to 1959. This iconic flagship of the Holland America Line carries a distinctly royal touch from the very beginning. On 13 September 1958, the ship was officially christened by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands . Just a year later, in 1959, a young Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands crossed the Atlantic on board, travelling to the United States during her formative years as heir to the D...

King Umberto II of Italy and the end of the italian monarchy

Image
King Umberto II of Italy remains one of the most fascinating figures in modern royal history. Born on 15 September 1904 as Umberto Nicola Tommaso Giovanni Maria di Savoia, he was the last King of Italy and the final sovereign of the House of Savoy. His reign was famously brief, lasting only 34 days from 9 May to 12 June 1946, which earned him the nickname the May King. Royal Family As the only son of King Victor Emmanuel III and Queen Elena of Montenegro, Umberto was raised to become monarch from birth. He received a traditional military education and followed a military path, although much of his public life was shaped by the turbulent years of Fascist Italy and the Second World War. During the war, he gradually turned against the conflict and quietly supported the removal of Benito Mussolini after Italy’s disastrous defeats. On 8 January 1930, Umberto married Princess Marie José of Belgium, the daughter of King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth of the Belgians. This marriage created an im...
