Who is who: the family d'Udekem d'Acoz

Image
When Crown Prince Philippe of Belgium (then Duke of Brabant) married to  Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz, the nobel family of Mathilde became immediately famous.  History The history of the d'Udekem family went back to the Late Middle Ages. The earliest records were dated in 1472 with the ancestor of the family: Gooris van Udekem (who bought then a residence).  Around 1716, the family d'Udekem was granted a noble title, but in 1795, after the French revolution, the nobility lost their status.  When King William I of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands reigned  over The Netherlands and Belgium as well, he granted the d'Udekem family their rightful titles.  Jacques François Joseph d'Udekem (1758-1829) was lord of Acoz, Villers, Potteries and Lasprelle, he lived in Louvain in "House den Arent", was granted in 1816 as a Knight of the Province of Hainaut with the title baron. The d'Udekem family held the title of baron but in 2000, after the wedding of Mathi

Book review Queen Victoria's Matchmaking

Image
Queen Victoria of The United Kingdom always has fascinated me and reading a book about her and her family really is a special treat. On 10 February 1840, Queen Victoria married her Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. This family already had important family ties with inter alia Belgium, Portugal and many other royal families in Europe. Screenshot of the Bookcover However the new royal couple and especially Prince Albert had a plan. They wanted to secure the peace in Europe through the marriages of their children and even grandchildren. After the death of Prince Albert in 1861, Queen Victoria continued to forfill their dream. The book mentions lots of children and grandchildren and the making of their wedding plans. Queen Victoria's Matchmaking was written by Deborah Cadbury and translated in Dutch in 2017 by Roelof Posthuma/Nieuw Amsterdam. I like the way the author wrote this book, the division into clear chapters and the use of the 'nickna

Queen Wilhelmina of The Netherlands

On 6 June 2019 it will be 75 years ago that the Normandy landings, also known as D-Day took place. This marked the beginning of the end of World War II. World War II was a dramatic period in the life of many people also in that of many royal families. In May 1940, Queen Wilhelmina of The Netherlands had to make the major decision in her whole kinship. To stay or to leave The Netherlands during the war. Queen Wilhelmina was born on 31 August 1890 at Noordeinde Palace in The Hague, The Netherlands. Her parents were King William III of The Netherlands and Princess Emma of Waldeck-Piedmont. In 1895 Wilhelmina visited Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. The Queen wrote in her diary: The young Queen still her hair hanging loose. She is slender and graceful, and makes an impression as a very intelligent and very cute girl. She speaks good English and knows how to behave with charming manners.  Emma and the later Queen Wilhelmina of The Netherlands Taken in Het Loo Pa

Sandringham House and its history

Image
On 20 december 2018, Queen Elizabeth II took the train from London to Norfolk. There the Queen will traditionally stay at Sandringham House during the winter months. It really is her favourite Christmas destination. At Sandringham members of the royal family will join Her majesty with the festivities such as Christmas and New Years's Evy. Sandringham House not only has a great role in present times but it also had a wonderful royal history. Sandringham House taken by my mother in 2017 Some royal history Sandringham is first mentioned in the Domesday Book as "sant-Dersingham". It was the land awarded to a Norman knight, Robert Fitz-Corbun after the conquest of England. In the Elizabethan era a manor was built on the site of the present house. In the 18th. century it came into the possession of the Hoste Henly family, which were descendants of Dutch refugees. In 1834, Henry Hoste Henley died without issue and the estate was bought by John Motteu

Today in History - December 12th. 1574 - Anne of Denmark

On December 12th. 1574, Anne of Denmark was born at Skanderborg Castle in Denmark. Anne of Denmark Source picture: Wikipedia Anne was born on 12 December 1574 at the castle of Skanderborg on the Jutland Peninsula in the Kingdom of Denmark to Sophie of Mecklenburg-Güstrow and King Frederick II of Denmark.  In need of a male heir the King had been hoping for a son, and Sophie gave birth to a son, Christian IV of Denmark, three years later. With her older sister, Elizabeth, Anne was sent to be raised at Güstrow by her maternal grandparents, the Duke and Duchess of Mecklenburg. Christian was also sent to be brought up at Güstrow but two years later, in 1579, his father the King wrote to his parents-in-law, to request the return of his sons, Christian and Ulrich, (probably, at the urging of the Rigsråd, the Danish Privy Council), and Anne and Elizabeth returned with him. Anne enjoyed a close, happy family upbringing in Denmark, thanks largely to Queen Sophie, who nursed the child
