However Queen Paola of Belgium also has lots of Belgian roots.
Her paternal grandmother was Laura Mosselman du Chenoy (1851-1925).
She was the daughter of senator Théodore Mosselman du Chenoy and
Isabella Coghen (herself the daughter of minister Jacques Coghen).
In 1837 Jacques Cohen was granted the title 'Count' by the Vatican.
Later in 1839, the title Count was granted in the Kingdom of Belgium.
All his descendants were Count or Countess and included in the
nobility.
In the royal family of Belgium there still is an important heirloom of
Laura Mosselman du Chenoy: her bridal veil.
This was worn by her daughter-in-law: Luisa (the mother of Queen Paola),
Queen Paola (then Princess of Liège),
Astrid (daughter of Queen Paola),
Mathilde (daughter-in-law of Queen Paola and current Queen of Belgium)
and Claire (daughter-in-law of Queen Paola).
