August 8th. 1661 marks the birth of Johann Matthias von der Schuelenberg. This happy event took place in Emden near Magdeburg (now located in Germany). Between 1687 and 1688 he fought with the imperial troops against the Turks in Hungary. In 1689 Johann Matthias became Colonel in the German Regiment of Victor Amadeus II of Savoy where he was severely wounded. Johann Matthias recovered and in 1702 he joined the Saxony army to fight in the Great Northern War against Charles XII of Sweden. He acquired his greatest fame during the defence of Corfu in 1716 against the Ottoman Turks. In Corfu, Johann Matthias von der Schuelenberg has his own statue.
