Special Today in History - May 1st. - International Workers' Day

International Workers' Day is a celebration of labour and takes place on May 1st. Stamps - Source picture: Wikipedia May 1st. was chosen as date for the International Workers' Day by socialists and communists to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago which took place on May 4th. 1886. Haymarket Affair - Source picture: Wikipedia Haymarket affair The police was trying to disperse a public assembly during a general strike for  the 8-hours workday, when an unknown person threw a bomb to the police.   The police  reacted by firing on the workers. This action killed 4 workers.  Nowadays May 1st. is in many countries a public holiday. In Belgium there are a lot of processions and political speeches made by the socialist movement.

OTD May 1st. 1920 Princess Margaret of Connaught

Princess Margaret of Connaught was born on January 15th. 1882 in Surrey (United Kingdom). Her parents were Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, and Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. Princess Margaret of Connaught - Source picture: Wikipedia On a trip in Egypt, Princess Margaret of Connaught met Prince Gustaf Adolf  of Sweden (the future Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden).  Although the meeting was arranged, they fell in love at first sight.  Princess Margaret of Connaught and her husband Source picture: Wikipedia On June 15th. 1905 they married in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. One wedding present was the Connaught tiara, which is still in the Swedish Jewelry collection today. (see the first picture above)They had 5 children. Crown Princess Margaret died suddenly on May 1st. 1920.

Today in History - April 30th.1847 - Archduke Charles of Austria, Duke of Teschen

Archduke Charles (full name in German: Karl Ludwig Johann Joseph Lorenz) of Austria was born on September 5th. 1771 in Florence (then the Grand Duchy of Tuscany). Archduke Charles of Austria - Source picture: Wikipedia His parents were Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor and Infanta Maria Luisa of Spain. In 1815 he married Princess Henrietta of Nassau-Weilburg.  They had 7 children. He commanded a Brigade at the Battle of Jemappes (1792). In 1806 he became a field marshal. OTD April 29th.1688 Frederick William Elector of Brandenburg

Frederick William (in German: Friedrich Wilhelm) was born on February 16th. 1620 in Stadtschloss Berlin (Germany). He was a member of the House of Hohenzollern. Frederick William I elector of Brandenburg in Berlin  His parents were Georg William, Elector of Brandenburg and  Elisabeth Charlotte of the Palatinate. On December 7th. 1646 he married Luise Henriette of Nassau  in The Hague. (She was the daughter of Frederick Henry of Orange-Nassau and  Amalia of Solms- Braunfelds).They had 6 children.
