Today in History - August 2nd. 1762 - Johann Jacob Scheucher

On August 2nd. 1762, Johann Jacob Scheucher was born in Zürich (Switzerland). The young man got the chance to study @ some remarkable schools and universities in Europe like the University of Utrecht where he finished his degree in medicine. Source picture: Wikipedia Johann Jacob Scheucher became one of the most important scientists of his time. Tsar Peter the Great of Russia offered him a position @ court, which he refused. The scientist wrote several books.

OTD 1 August 1713 Charles I Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel

August 1st. 1713 marks the birth of Charles (in German: Karl) of  Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Charles of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel -  Source picture: Wikipedia Charles distinguished himself in the army when he fought under  Prince Eugene of Savoy against the Ottoman Empire. In 1733 Charles married Princess Philippine Charlotte of Prussia  (daughter of Frederick William I of Prussia and Sophia Dorothea of Hanover).  In 1735 he inherited the Principality of Wolfenbüttel (capital Brunswick)  from his father.  This is now located in the state Lower Saxony in the north of Germany. Charles founded the Collegium Carolinum which is known today as the Technical University of Brunswick. He also established the  Fürstenberg Porcelain Company.  The ruler of Brunswick only had one problem: he did not manage to keep  the state finance under control. At the end Charles's eldest son  Charles William Ferdinand took over the government. This ruler died on M
