Louis VIII of France - The Lion

Image
On 14 July 1223, Louis VIII of France succeeded his father Philip II as King of France. His coronation took place on 6 August in the cathedral of Reims. But who was he? Louis was born on 5 September 1187 as a son of King Philip II of France and Isabelle of Hainaut. Love and Marriage In the summer of 1195 a marriage between Louis and Eleanor of Brittany, a niece of King Richard I of England was suggested to make an alliance between Philip II and Richard. But this plan failed which led to a sudden deterioration in the relations between Richard and Philip. On 23 May 1200 at the age of 12!, Louis was married to Blanche of Castile, daughter of King Alfonso VIII of Castile and Eleanor of England, the sister of King Richard I of England. England In 1215, the English barons rebelled against King John of England during the First Baron's War. The barons offered the throne to Prince Louis, who landed on the Isle of Thanet in Kent, England at the head of an army.

With this 'Books on Sunday', the Allaboutroyalfamilies blog continues to review books about the Belgian royal family. Albert & Elisabeth is written by Princess Esmeralda of Belgium and Christophe Vachaudez. It was issued by Lannoo. Based on numerous private photos, most of them were never published before, the book 'Albert & Elisabeth' shows an intimate portrait of the third Belgian King and Queen. King Albert I of Belgium and Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, born duchess in Bavaria, were very popular not only in their own country but also in Europe, United Kingdom and the world, especially because of their role during World War I. With their popularity, then and now, in mind, this royal history book full with lovely pictures is a real treasure to read. Princess Esmeralda (also mentioned as Princess Marie-Esméralda) of Belgium is the youngest daughter of King  Leopold III and Lilian Baels.  She is thus a granddaughter of King  Albert I of Bel

A royal visit in Benidorm, Spain

Image
King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain visited Benidorm, the famous holiday resort at the Costa Blanca, during their tour on 3 July 2020. They did this to promote the Spanish tourism, just as other royals did in their countries, inter alia King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium. Of course Benidorm is well-known for his mass tourism and less for its royal history, but, nevertheless I've found some lovely royal traces. Benidorm Spain History Since 1925, Benidorm had been a tourist destination in Spain, when its port was extended and the first hotels were built. In the 1950's there was a boom of tourism in Benidorm. People from Madrid like(d) to come to this place at the Costa Blanca. Benidorm Beach Today it is known for its hotel industry, its beaches and it skyscrapers and it receives many tourists from everywhere. This is the recent history, but Benidorm played an important role during the ancient times. Benidorm Buildings Alread

The Countess, Napoleon and St. Helena

Image
Yes! I've finished another very interesting book: The Countess, Napoleon and St. Helena. It is written by a wonderful author: Lally Brown. Readers of the Allaboutroyalfamiliesblog already know that I've a 'small' fascination about Napoleon Bonaparte, an ordinary man who became Emperor of France. On Twitter I've 'met' several years ago a lovely author: Lally Brown. We started to talk about my other passion gardening and about her amazing roses. Via Twitter and Lally I discovered her fascinating books: - The Volcano, Montserrat and me; - High and dry in the BVI; - The Countess, Napoleon and St. Helena. When reading books, I always love two important things: the style of the author and the fact if the book is written chronologically. For me the latter is very important in history works. Lally Brown, took me back to 1815. After the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated and he was forced to exile to St. Helena. So the Co
