Image
On 10 November 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte became the First Consul of France . The First Consul of France was the top-level Government of France, which was established after the fall of the Directory.  On 9 November 1799, the Coup of 18 Brumaire took place. Then Napoleon  Bonaparte gained the power after a bloodless Coup d'état.    What preceded French military disasters in 1798 and 1799 had shaken the Directory, and eventually shattered it in November 1799. On the morning of 18 Brumaire, Lucien Bonaparte falsely persuaded the Councils that a Jacobin coup was at hand in Paris. Napoleon was charged with the safety of the two Councils and given command of all available local troops.  Later that morning, Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès and Roger Ducos  resigned as Directors. Who is who? The Lobkowicz family and its history

Image
While reading about the Czech Republic, I discovered a very interesting noble family, that dates back to the 14th. century. In fact it is one of the oldest Bohemian noble families.  Mikulas Chudy "The Poor" (1378-1435) was a poor squire from the village of Ujezd in Bohemia. After studying at the Charles University in Prague, he was noticed by King Wenceslaus IV, who rewarded him for his service with the title of the  village Lobkovice. The former poor squire called himself Nicholas Lobkowicz. During his service with the king, he captured several castles, belonging to rebellious nobles; he was allowed to keep one, Haistejn Castle as a Hereditary possession.  Who is who? Jan Haistejsky z Lobkowicz (1450-1517) was a diplomat who traveled to  Luxembourg in 1477 and to Rome in 1487. King Vladislaus II entrusted him with negotiating his marriage to Mary of Burgundy. But she would marry the later Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II.  Jan's brother Bohuslav Lobkowicz (1461-1510) was

When Crown Prince Philippe of Belgium (then Duke of Brabant) married to  Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz, the nobel family of Mathilde became immediately famous.  History The history of the d'Udekem family went back to the Late Middle Ages. The earliest records were dated in 1472 with the ancestor of the family: Gooris van Udekem (who bought then a residence).  Around 1716, the family d'Udekem was granted a noble title, but in 1795, after the French revolution, the nobility lost their status.  When King William I of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands reigned  over The Netherlands and Belgium as well, he granted the d'Udekem family their rightful titles.  Jacques François Joseph d'Udekem (1758-1829) was lord of Acoz, Villers, Potteries and Lasprelle, he lived in Louvain in "House den Arent", was granted in 1816 as a Knight of the Province of Hainaut with the title baron. The d'Udekem family held the title of baron but in 2000, after the wedding of Mathi

Is tennis a Royal Hobby or not? Tennis is mentioned in literature as far back as the Middle Ages. Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur's round table, plays  tennis against a group of 17 giants in the Turke and Gowin (c 1500).  The Medieval form of tennis is termed as real tennis, a game that evolved over three centuries from an earlier ball game played around the 12th. century in  France which involved hitting a ball with a bare and later with a glove. By the 16th. century, the glove had become a racket, the game had moved to an enclosed playing area, and the rules had been stabilized. Real tennis  spread in popularity throughout royalty in Europe, reaching its peak in the 16th. century.  Austria In 1899 Archduke Franz Ferdinand left his watch chain after a tennis party in  Pressburg. In his watch chain there was a portrait of his later wife Sophie.  Forgetting his

Is falconry a royal hobby?

Image
Falconry is the hunting of wild animals in their natural habitat and stay by means of a trained bird or prey.  The practice of hunting with a conditioned falconry bird also is called "hawking".  Falconry is an art. It requires long hours, constant devotion, finesse, subtlety and skill.  The falconer must train a bird of prey to fly free, hunt for a human being and then  accept a return to captivity.  Falconry was just not a hobby. It was a lifestyle. Falconers must devote time to their birds each and every day. It must be no surprise that  falconry has a long and royal history just as horse riding.
