OTD 6 June 1944 Start of Operation Overlord D-day

Operation Overlord was the code name for the Battle of Normandy, when the allied troops launched a successful invasion of the German Occupied Western Europe. Landing in Normandy  This big operation started on June 6th. 1944 with the Normandy landings (now known as D-Day). In November 1943 the decision was taken to undertake a cross-channel invasion. Two important generals were appointed: Dwight D. Eisenhower , a five star general of the American Army during World War II, who became later president of the USA (1953 -1961) Sir Bernard Montgomery , nicknamed "Monty' was a senior officer of the British Army. *** Did you know that Operation Overlord originally was planned  on 5 June 1944? OTD June 5th 1243 Constance of Babenberg

Constance of Babenberg was born in 1212 as a daughter of Leopold VI of Austria and his wife Theodora Angelina. Constance of Babenberg - Source picture: Wikipedia On May 1st. 1234 Constance of Babenberg married Henry the Illustrious of Meissen. The wedding took place in Vienna. They had two sons. Constance died on June 5th. 1243. A street in Donnaustadt (Vienna) was named in her honour.

OTD 4 June 1604 Claudia de Medici

Claudia de' Medici was born on June 4th. 1604 in Palazzo Pitti in Florence (Italy). Her parents were Ferdinando I de' Medici and Christina of Lorraine. Claudia de' Medici - Source picture: Wikipedia In 1620 she married Federico Ubaldo della Rovere, Duke of Urbino. They had 1 child. Claudia's husband suddenly died on June 29th. 1623. On April 19th. 1626 Claudia de' Medici married Leopold V, Archduke of Austria. She became Archduchess of Austria.  On December 25th. 1648 Claudia de' Medici died in Innsbruck.

OTD June 3rd. 1540 Charles II Archduke of Austria

Charles Francis (in German: Karl Franz) was born on June 3rd. 1540 in Vienna (Austria). Charles II, Archduke of Austria - Source picture: Wikipedia His parents were Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor and Anna of Bohemia and Hungary. There were negotiations for a marriage between Charles II, Archduke of Austria and Eizabeth I of England. This negotiations came not to a good end because of inter alia the difference in religion. On August 26th. 1571 he married Maria Anna of Bavaria in Vienna. They had 15 children. On July 10th. 1590 Charles II, Archduke of Austria died in Graz. He is buried in Seckau.
