The Roman Series: Who was Emperor Hadrian?

Image
Hadrian was born on 24 January 76, probably in Italy (near modern Seville) in the Roman province of Hispania Baetica. He was named Publius Aelius Hadrianus after his father. His father was a senator of praetorian rank.  Hadrian's mother was Domitia Paulina, daughter of a distinguished Hispano-Roman senatorial family from Gades (Cádiz).   Childhood Hadrian's father was thus a senator and would have spent much of his time in  Rome. Trajan was Hadrian's father's first cousin.  In 86, Hadrian's parents died. He was then only ten years old. He and his sister became wards of Trajan. Hadrian enjoyed hunting. When he was 14, Trajan ordered him to Rome and arranged his further education to become a young Roman aristocrat. Hadrian had an enthusiasm for Greek literature and  culture, which gave him the nickname: Graeculus ("Greekling"). Is motorcycling a royal hobby?

Motorcycling certainly is a royal hobby because many kings and princes like(d) to drive incognito around.  Motorcycling is the act of riding on a motorcycle. Motorcycles are mainly a luxury good in developed nations. There they are mostly for recreation or as a symbol of identity.  Belgium King Albert II of Belgium was known as a keen motor cyclist. However he stopped  after a few accidents. His most famous accident was around the time of the wedding of his daughter Princess Astrid.  King Albert I,   the grandfather of King Albert II, had a passion for mechanics and especially for motors too. Prince Hendrik of Denmark , the husband of Queen Margrethe of Denmark also liked to ride on a motor bike.  Germany Otto von Hessen died in an accident with his motor bike on 17 May 2020.  Italy Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, Prince of Venice, the grandson of Princess Marie-José of Belgi

Who is who? The Lobkowicz family and its history

Image
While reading about the Czech Republic, I discovered a very interesting noble family, that dates back to the 14th. century. In fact it is one of the oldest Bohemian noble families.  Mikulas Chudy "The Poor" (1378-1435) was a poor squire from the village of Ujezd in Bohemia. After studying at the Charles University in Prague, he was noticed by King Wenceslaus IV, who rewarded him for his service with the title of the  village Lobkovice. The former poor squire called himself Nicholas Lobkowicz. During his service with the king, he captured several castles, belonging to rebellious nobles; he was allowed to keep one, Haistejn Castle as a Hereditary possession.  Who is who? Jan Haistejsky z Lobkowicz (1450-1517) was a diplomat who traveled to  Luxembourg in 1477 and to Rome in 1487. King Vladislaus II entrusted him with negotiating his marriage to Mary of Burgundy. But she would marry the later Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II.  Jan's brother Bohuslav Lobkowicz (1461-1510) was

1911 - 1919: Succession troubles in Monaco?

Image
Recently I read various articles that a nephew of Prince Albert of Monaco claimed to be the real heir of the throne of Monaco. I wanted to know more about the "new" claimant and about the succession of the little, beautiful principality as well. More about the article on this link . History In 1612, Honoré II (1597-1662) was the first Lord of Monaco, who was granted the title Prince. He was the son of Hercule, Lord of Monaco (1562-1604) and Maria Landi. At the age of 6, Honoré's father was murdered. His uncle, Frederico Landi, the 4th. Prince of Val di Taro, became regent. However the Spanish influence over Monaco stayed until 1633. The first branch for the throne of Monaco were descendants of Princess Charlotte of Monaco . Princess Charlotte of Monaco was the daughter of Marie Juliette Louvet, a cabaret singer and Prince Louis II of Monaco. But as Louis II had no  legitimate children, the principality would have a succession crisis. The heir could be the nephew of Princ
