OTD 2 October 1921 - William II, King of Württemberg

On February 25th. 1848 a boy was born in Stuttgart (then capital of the Kingdom Württemberg). The boy received the name William (in German: Wilhelm). On February 15th. 1877 William married Princess Marie of Waldeck and Pyrmont (elder sister of Emma en Helena). They had 3 children, 1 survived childhood. Princess Marie died in 1882 (aged 24) from complications resulting from the birth of her third child. On April 8th. 1886 William married Princess Charlotte of Schaumburg-Lippe. October 1st. 1685 marks the birth of a boy named Charles, who became later an important man as Holy Roman Emperor, King of Bohemia, King of Hungary and Croatia, King of Serbia and Archduke of Austria. Charles VI and his family - Source picture: Wikipedia Charles was the second son of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, and his wife, Princess Eleonor Magdalene of Neuburg. His tutor became Anton Florian, Prince of Liechtenstein. In 1700 Charles II of Spain died without an heir, so Charles VI declared  himself as ruler of Spain (they were both members of the House of Habsburg). However the Treaties of Utrecht and Rastatt declared Philip (grandson of  King Louis XIV of France) as King of Spain. Due to this treaties the Netherlands (also Belgium) were ruled since then by the Austrians until the Congress of Vienna in 1815. September 30th. 1811 marks the birth of Princess Augusta of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in Weimar (Germany). Wilhelm thought Augusta was an Excellent Personality yet less attractive than her older sister Marie (who Wilhelms younger brother Karl already had married). Charlotte Augusta Mathilda was born on September 29th. 1766 in Buckingham Palace (London). Princess Charlotte with her mother - Source picture: Wikipedia Her parents were King George III of the United Kingdom and  Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Like her brothers and sisters Princess Charlotte was educated by tutors at Buckingham Palace, Kew Palace and Windsor Castle. On May 18th. 1797, Princess Charlotte married at the Chapel Royal at St. James's Palace, Prince Frederick of Württemberg. In 1800 the French Army occupied Württemberg and the Duke and Duchess exiled to Vienna. But Napoleon recognized them as King and Queen of Württemberg and the two came back. Corfu is a Greek Island in the Ionian Sea. Fortress in Corfu  - own picture taken in 2013 With the beautiful old buildings and the amazing sunset, I wanted to know  more about the history of this wonderful Greek Isle which has a mysterious legend. Once upon a time, Poseidon fell in love with the nymph Korkyra (daughter of Asopos and the nymph Metope). They had a child together which was called Phaiax (translated to Latin it is: Phaeacians). This became the nickname of Corfu: The Island of the Phaeacians.  Isn't that a beautiful legend?
