OTD 29 July 1981 Wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer

On July 29th. 1981, the wedding took place between Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer. Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Book Cover The ceremony was a traditional Church of England wedding ceremony in the gorgeous St. Paul's Cathedral in London. St Paul's Cathedral in London own picture taken in 2016 Charles, Prince of Wales took interest in her as a potential bride in the summer of 1980, when they were guests at a country weekend. Later the Prince invited Lady Diana Spencer for a sailing weekend to Cowes on board of the Royal Brittania. Later Lady Diana was invited at Balmoral Castle where she was well received by the Queen, Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen mother. On July 25th. 1554 an important wedding took place at the Winchester cathedral in England. The marriage between Queen Mary I of England and Philip, Prince of Asturias (the later King Philip II of Spain) was arranged and had a lot of political influence. In England the nobles didn't like the idea of a marriage between their Queen and someone from the House of Habsburg. They feared the independence of England. Besides that Philip could not speak English. The two spoke to each other in a mix of Spanish, French and Latin. Family ties Queen Mary I of England was the daughter of King Henry VIII of England and Catherina of Aragon. Philip II was a son of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and Isabella of Portugal Charles V's mother, Joanna of Castile, was the daughter of King Ferdinand II of Aragon. Philip the Handsome was born on July 22nd. 1478 in Bruges (Belgium). Family His parents were Mary, Duchess of Burgundy and Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor. Philip the Handsome was named after his great-grandfather, through his mother, Philip the Good. Love & Marriage After the death of his mother, Mary, Philip inherited her Burgundian possessions under the guardianship of his father. In 1493, Frederick III, Holy Roman Empire died and Philip's father Maximilian became the new emperor. In 1494 Maximilian signed the Treaty of Senlis and Philip took over the rule of the Burgundian lands. However the real power was in the hands of a council of Burgundian nobles. On October 20th. 1496, Philip the Handsome married Joanna, a daughter of King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile in Lier, Belgium. Isabella of Austria was born on July 18th. 1501 in Brussels. Family Her parents were Philip I of Castile and Joanna of Castile (called the mad). Her grandparents were: Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor Mary, Duchess of Burgundy King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile She was the sister of inter alia: Emperor Charles V Eleanor, Queen of Charles Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor Mary, Queen of Hungary Catherine, Queen of Portugal In her childhood, Isabella of Austria spent her time with her aunt Margaret of Austria, who was then the governor of the Habsburg Netherlands. Love and Marriage On August 12th. 1515, Isabella married King Christian II of Denmark in Copenhagen. In the first years of their marriage, Isabella had a lot of concurrence of her husband's mistress.  In 1517 this mistress died and the marriage improved. Princess Louise of France was born on 15 July 1737 at the Royal Palace of Versailles. Family Her parents were King Louis XV of France and Maria Leszczynska (daughter of King Stanislaw I of Poland). Life When none of King Louis' plans of a marriage for Princess Louise, came to something, she sought consolation in her religion. In 1770, Princess Louise asked her father to become a Carmelite nun and she joined the convent at Saint-Denis. On October 1st. 1771 Princess Louise gave her vows and she was fully accepted in the order. On November 25th. 1773, Princess Louise became a prioress of the convent. In the order, Princess Louise took the name of Thérèse of Saint Augustine. On May 26th. 1774, two weeks after the death of her father, Princess Louise was visited by her nephew King Louis XVI. OTD 11 July 1302 Battle of the Golden Spurs

On July 11th. 1302, the Battle of the Golden Spurs (in Dutch: Guldensporenslag) took place. This was also called the Battle of Courtrai. Opponents This battle took place between the forces of the County of Flanders and the Kingdom of France. Place The two armies met each other near Courtrai (in Dutch: Kortrijk) in West-Flanders, Belgium. Source picture: Wikipedia Results The French knights were unable to to defeat the Flemish well trained army and they suffered huge loses. The Flemish soldiers used a typical weapon from that time called "Goedendag" (1.5m long wooden shaft and topped with a steel spike). The Battle soon became known as the Battle of the Golden Spurs after the more than 500 pairs of spurs that were captured on the battlefield. Carlos, Prince of Asturias was born on July 8th. 1545 in Valladolid, Spain. Family His parents were King Philip II of Spain and Maria Manuella of Portugal. He was the grandson of Emperor Charles V. Love and Marriage? In 1559, Carlos was betrothed to Elizabeth of Valois, the eldest daughter of King Henry II of France and Catherine de' Medici. Due to political reasons she married Carlos' father, King Philip II of Spain. Three other brides were proposed to Carlos: Mary, Queen of Scots; Margaret of Valois; Anna of Austria (who should later marry to ..... King Philip II of Spain.) Life In 1560, Carlos was declared heir-apparent of the Castilian throne and later to the Crown of Aragon as well. He also became knight in the order of the Golden Fleece. Joan of England was born on 5 July 1321 in the Tower of London. Family Her parents were King Edward II of England and Isabella of France. Her siblings were the later King Edward III of England, John of Eltham, Earl of Cornwall and Eleanor of Woodstock. Love and Marriage On 17 July 1328, Joan of England married the future  King David II of Scotland. At that time she was seven years old he only four years! Although this marriage lasted for 34 years, it was regarded as loveless. Queen consort of Scotland On 7 June 1329, David became King of Scotland after the death of King Robert I of Scotland. 2 July 1698 marks the birth of Francesco Maria d' Este. This took place at the Ducal Palace of Modena (now Italy). Duchy of Modena The Duchy of Modena was formed in 1452. In 1849 the Duchy was annexed by Piedmont-Sardinia. Family His parents were Rinaldo d' Este, Duke of Modena and Duchess Charlotte of Brunswick-Lünenburg. Love and Marriage Francesco III d' Este married Charlotte Aglaé d' Orléans. She was the daughter of Philippe d' Orléans and Françoise Marie de Bourbon. The couple would have ten children. Reign On 26 October 1737, Francesco III d' Este became Duke of Modena and Reggio. During his reign he had to deal with high debts. This was caused by Wars of the Spanish, Polish and Austrian succession. Therefore, Francesco had to sell a lot of art works from the Estense Gallery. On 1 July 1534, Frederick II was born in Haderslev, Denmark. Family His parents were King Christian III of Denmark and Dorothea of Saxe-Lauenburg. Reign On January 1st. 1559, Frederick became King of Denmark and Norway. From an early age he was interested a lot in the military. It couldn't be no surprise that there was a war during his reign. In 1563 Frederick tried to conquer Sweden but this became no success.Finally a peace treaty was signed in 1570. Besides this war, Frederick wanted to support the protestant powers. Queen Elisabeth I of England made him Knight of the Garter. As a person Frederick was described as hot-heated, courageous and ambitious. He loved wine, hunting and women. For Denmark, this was a period of growth. Love and Marriage Some sources said that Frederick wanted to marry his mistress, Anne of Hardenberg, but finally people persuaded him not to do this.
